The leading countries in science and technology tried to bridge the gap between science and culture by the media and served it as a device to raise public awareness and education.
In this regard, Avicenna Research Institute (ARI) pioneered the producing of medical documentaries in Iran to satisfy the society demand and increase the efficient collaboration between scientists and artists. Considering that documentary films benefit from a huge potentiality to simply convey complicated scientific subjects and scrutinize their different aspects, ARI initiated a close cooperation with Documentary & Experimental Film Center (DEFC) since 2003. Primarily some documentaries on modern assisted reproductive techniques (¬ART) including embryo and gamete donation as well as surrogacy were produced.
Although, at first glance, these documentaries have exclusively medical/scientific themes, but the thorough analysis reveals their interdisciplinary contents affecting an individual's life in terms of ethical, legal, economic, social and psychological aspects.
Finally, the mutual efforts between Avicenna Research Institute and DEFC led to the production of five documentaries on "Abortion", "Gamete and Embryo Donation",   "Surrogacy", "Fertility & Insurance" and "An Infertile Couple's Life (The Absence of A Lady or A Man Named "B")". Moreover, ARI produced a documentary entitled "Another Season" on different dimensions of fertility preservation particularly in children. The next step was to broaden the scope of collaboration and address the necessity of joint activities between experts in respective fields of science and art. Therefore, in the 3rd Iranian Documentary Film Festival 2009, Avicenna Research Institute and DEFC jointly organized the scientific-¬medical documentaries section with emphasis on the theme of "Technology and The Emergence of Life".
